300 Hour Advanced Teacher Training

Energy, flow and awareness as your body in wholeness

Next course begins October 2022

Inroduction

This course is for Yoga and Hot Yoga teachers, and regular practitioners, who want to explore Yoga, energy and movement in depth. It’s divided into six, 50 hour modules. Collectively, these will reinvigorate your knowledge and Yoga practice from the ground up, from the outside to deep inside. This is in-person training, not online.

You can purchase all six modules as a course, or buy them individually.

Your course is led by Ed Wood (E-RYT500, YACEP, Yoga Elder). Ed is certified to the highest level with Yoga Alliance International, and is a registered Yoga Elder with the Independent Yoga Network.

In brief...

Learn how your fascia grows to support movement. Explore this as a felt sense in Vinyasa practice. Understand the relationship to the meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine through Yin Yoga. Discover the mobile, emotional person within through the deeper practices of pranayama, meditation, mindfulness and Yoga Nidra. Reflect on your teaching and practice new skills.

A five-day retreat brings all of your new learning together into focus at the end of the course.

Fascia - Building Asana from the Ground Up

2022: 21-23 Oct & 26, 27 Nov

Learn about fascia as the connective network that holds us together and reshapes our form in response to our movements. Through stronger Vinyasa, we deconstruct asana seeking to experience it happening real-time. You’ll emerge with a deeper insight into the asana and how they can arise from within, rather than simply trained externally. This is how a posture can be an asana – a steady, comfortable position. We’ll ask – how can this inform our teaching?

Yin Yoga and the Energy Meridians

2023: 6-8 Jan & 4, 5 Feb

Yin Yoga relates closely to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Asana stimulate the meridian lines and longer holds offer space for the body’s energy to shift. We’ll look at postures in detail and the paths and properties of the meridians themselves. We’ll bring it together by designing Yin Yoga practices that move us towards positive energetic outcomes. You’ll have opportunity to practice teaching from your new knowledge.

Meditation, Mindfulness and Yoga Nidra

2023: 3-5 Mar & 15, 16 Apr

Yoga practitioners know that if we can calm our breath, we can reduce mental and physical tension. Mindfulness, meditation and Yoga Nidra reliably regulate unwanted nervous activation and regular practice brings lasting change: we’re just less likely to be triggered. This module explores all three: you’ll learn tools and techniques for your own practice and look at ways to teach others.

Health and the Subtle Body in Yoga

2023: 16-18 Jun & 8, 9 Jul

Yogis agree that energy and consciousness are at work within us. This module explores health and the human body an expression of subtle energy, as taught in the classic Hatha Yoga Pradipika. We’ll discover how Ayurveda builds on this model. Given some of Yoga’s lifestyle observances (yamas and niyamas), we ask: how can we make health the central theme of our Yoga practice?

Pranayama, Sound and Chanting

2023: 15-17 Sep & 14, 15 Oct

Ancient Yogis observed the rhythm of the breath, and concluded that our whole world is a repeating pattern of energy. We’ll begin our journey through sound and by learning about (and practicing) chanting. You’ll renew and reinvigorate your current breath practice, and learn about some fascinating developments in breath science that can reset your entire system. We’ll link pranayama to asana, and learn how to get the most from each round of breath.

Retreat Intensive

2023: 23-29 Oct

This retreat revists key elements and practices from each of the study modules. No previous experience is assumed, but it’s recommended that you have studied at least one of the other modules in order to get the most out of the experience. It is an intensive retreat, so expect to be engaged in some kind of practice for 8-9 hours per day. Practice periods are spread out between the hours of 6AM-9PM, so there will be ample opportunity to rest, eat and socialise.

Practical details

We explore biotensegrity and the meridian-like scaffolding that myofascial structures provide. Stronger Vinyasa practice is our gateway into this physicality. We’ll reflect on what this means to our practice and teaching.

We explore the meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine through Yin Yoga, and learn to design Yin practices that target specific outcomes. We marry all our asana practice with extensive breathwork, and reflect on the energetic effects. You will have opportunity to practice teaching the new concepts you’ve learned.

Through our work with asana and breath, we can develop a felt and present body awareness that links understanding, energy, and flow as the body in wholeness. As such, this course also includes a deeper look into the practices of meditation, mindfulness and Yoga Nidra. What is the self under the layers of body and breath? You’ll deepen your understanding of Hatha Yoga subtle body, how this model informs the science of Ayurveda and how to build a health-centric Yoga practice.

You’ll be given opportunities to practice teaching based on these new principles and techniques. There are some assignments to work on for yourself. Through these, you’ll develop your understanding and find way to apply your new skills to real-world scenarios.

Our understanding of the human body and the human condition is changing rapidly. We now know that much of our body support and function comes from the web of fascia inside. And we’ve learned that our emotions and attitudes really are bound up in the body’s physiology. The physical structure and the mind shape each other in a dynamic relationship. Yoga teachers – and anyone diving deep into Yoga – need a platform to learn about and explore this relationship. How can we use the tools of Yoga to make the most of it? Yoga offers lots of techniques: postures, breathing practices, meditation, mindfulness, chanting, study, lifestyle observances. What are the best tools for an individual to use?

If you want to look in detail at these – if you want to develop a practical approach to helping yourself and others – then this course is for you. You don’t have to be a teacher: the main qualification is to come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
